Ground-Based Telescopes Score a Hat Trick

Three Earth-size planets were announced on May 3, 2016, to have been found in orbit around a low-mass star named TRAPPIST-1 by its discoverers, led by Belgian Michael Gillon (see Figure 10.1), evidently an enthusiast for Belgian Trappist beer. Gillon and his Geneva Observatory team had already struck pay dirt back in May 2007 (described in detail in TCU) when he announced the discovery of the first transiting super-Earth, Gliese 436b, albeit a hot super-Earth, with a mass almost 23 times that of Earth and an orbital period of only 2.6 days. Gliese 436b was not a good place to think about looking for life, but it proved the point that super-Earths could be detected by transit photometry, and Gillon had shown that he knew how to do that, even from the ground.
